PIM, feed manager, or operator: what €10–25M fashion brands actually need
A practical decision framework for brands stuck between buying more software and hiring another coordinator.
Every growing fashion brand hits the same fork: listings are drifting, launches hurt, and someone suggests either buying a PIM or hiring a marketplace coordinator. Both answers can be wrong.
What a PIM is actually for
A product information management platform is a system of record for complex, high-volume catalog data with many contributors. It earns its keep when you have thousands of SKUs, multiple internal teams writing product data, and governance requirements. At €10–25M with a Shopify or Centra source of truth, most brands are buying a governance solution for an operations problem — and inheriting an implementation project.
What a feed manager is actually for
Channable, Productsup and ChannelEngine are excellent at moving and transforming data once someone has decided what the correct data is. They are pipes. They don't decide that Zalando changed its size format, they don't write your Italian product copy, and they don't notice when 40 listings quietly dropped out of search. Someone competent has to sit behind the dashboard every day.
What an operator is actually for
The gap between "buy software" and "hire an FTE" is where most mid-size brands actually live. The work is real, daily, and highly repetitive, but it isn't a full role's worth of strategy — and the person you hire for it turns over roughly every eighteen months, taking the platform-specific knowledge with them.
A short decision test
If your problem is that nobody agrees what the correct product data is, you have a governance problem: consider a PIM. If your problem is that correct data isn't reaching channels, you have a pipes problem: get a feed manager. If your problem is that the data is correct in Shopify and wrong everywhere else by Thursday, you have an operations problem — and no tool will solve it, because tools don't run themselves.
Most brands at this size have the third problem. Buying for the first two and hoping it fixes the third is the most common and most expensive mistake in multi-channel catalog ops.
