The real cost of a collection launch: 200 SKUs, 5 channels, 4 languages
A line-by-line look at where the hours go when a fashion brand launches a collection across marketplaces and DTC — and what that week actually costs.
Ask a Head of eCommerce what a collection launch costs and you'll usually hear a media number. Ask their marketplace coordinator and you'll hear a different answer: a week. Sometimes two.
Where the hours actually go
Take 200 new SKUs going live on a DTC store plus four marketplaces, in four languages. The work isn't one task, it's the same task repeated with different rules: attribute mapping per channel, size format normalization, category assignment, translated titles and descriptions, image spec compliance, price and VAT per market, then validation and re-submission for everything that bounced.
Multiply 200 SKUs by five channels and you have 1,000 listing states to be correct, each with four language variants of the copy that matters. Even at a very fast two minutes per listing state, that's over 30 hours of pure execution — before anything fails validation.
The compounding failures
Launch weeks are also when errors are cheapest to make and most expensive to keep. A wrong category on day one means the product never enters the right filter for the whole season. A missing translation means the German listing runs on English copy, converting at a fraction of its potential, often for months, because nobody re-audits a launched collection.
The cost nobody books
The hard cost is straightforward: a fully loaded coordinator at €50–75K a year, spending a week on launch, is roughly €1,200–1,500 of salary per launch — times four to six collections and drops a year. The real cost is what that person didn't do that week: no merchandising analysis, no channel expansion prep, no marketplace performance review.
Making launches boring
The fix is unglamorous: one canonical source of truth, per-channel templates maintained ahead of the launch rather than during it, translation pipelines that run on the canonical copy, and a validation pass that catches rejections before the platform does.
Done that way, a 200-SKU launch stops being an all-hands fire drill and becomes a scheduled task with a checklist. Same collection, same channels, a fraction of the internal cost.
